Play Yahtzee free online

Yahtzee is the dice game of five dice, three rolls and a score card of thirteen boxes. Roll, keep the dice you like, roll the rest, and fill one box each turn. After thirteen turns the card is full and your score is added up for you. Play on your own to beat your best score, or against the computer. Nothing to download and nothing to sign up for: a game you start is saved in this browser.

How to play Yahtzee

  1. Roll. Press Roll to throw all five dice.
  2. Keep and roll again. Tap the dice you want to keep; they rise and say Held. Roll again, and only the other dice move. You get three rolls a turn, and you can stop after one or two.
  3. Score one box. The open boxes show what these dice would score in them. Tap one to fill it in. Every box is filled once, and if nothing fits you must still fill one, for 0.

The bonuses. If Ones to Sixes add up to 63 or more, you get 35 more; 63 is three of each number. Each extra Yahtzee after a 50 in the Yahtzee box adds 100, and the Joker rules say where it goes. The Yahtzee rules page explains them with pictures.

Play against the computer

Before your first roll, choose Against the computer and how well it plays. After each box you fill, the computer takes its turn on the same tray, slowly enough to follow: what it rolls, what it keeps, and where it scores. Its scores are the second, smaller number on each row of the card, and the total row shows both. It sees only its own card and dice. The higher total after thirteen turns wins.

  • Easy plays like a beginner: it keeps its most common number and takes the best score it sees. About 170 a game.
  • Medium plays like a good regular player. About 220 a game.
  • Hard plays the way Hint advises, thinking two rolls ahead and saving its boxes. About 235 a game.

Controls

Tap a die to hold it and tap it again to let it roll. Hint picks the dice to keep or the box to fill and says why, and holds the dice for you. Undo takes back the box you just filled, until you roll again, in case you tapped the wrong one; against the computer, its turn goes back too, and it plays the same turn again.

With a keyboard: R rolls, 1 to 5 hold the dice from left to right, Tab reaches the score card and Enter fills a box. H asks for a hint and U undoes.

Tips for a higher score

  • Go for the bonus. Three of a number in each upper box makes exactly 63. A fourth 5 or 6 makes up for a box that came up short.
  • Keep pairs and threes of high numbers. They feed Fives, Sixes, three and four of a kind and a Yahtzee all at once.
  • Save Chance. It is the safe place for a poor roll late in the game, so try not to use it early.
  • Know where a 0 goes. When nothing fits, a 0 in Ones or in the Yahtzee box late in the game usually costs least.
