Play Mahjong Connect free online
Mahjong Connect is the tile-matching puzzle where two matching tiles can be taken away when a line with no more than two turns joins them. Clear every tile from the table to win. There is nothing to download and nothing to sign up for, the tiles are large and clear, and a game you start is saved in this browser if you need to stop.
You do not need to know mahjong, or read the Chinese characters: every number tile carries a large number in its corner, and every wind tile its letter. The game is also known as Shisen-Sho and as Onet.
How to play
- Pick a tile. Tap or click it.
- Pick its match. Tiles match when they are the same, and any two flowers or any two seasons match each other.
- Mind the line. The two tiles go only if a line can join them through empty squares with no more than two turns. The line may run around the outside of the board. When they go, you see the line that joined them.
Tiles on the outside of the board are the easiest to join, so most games start there and work inwards. How to play Mahjong Connect, with pictures of the line.
Every board can be cleared
Every deal here is built from a way to clear it, so a win is always possible. You can still get stuck: when there are four of a kind, which two you take first matters, and the last tiles can end up blocking each other. When no pair can be joined, the game says so. Shuffle then moves the tiles that are left so that they can all be cleared again, and Undo takes back as many matches as you like.
Hint shows two tiles that join, draws the line between them, and says in a plain sentence how it turns. Hints come from a way to clear the whole board, so following them never leads you into a corner.
Three boards
- Easy: 48 large tiles, 8 by 6. Every tile has exactly one partner, so any pair you take is a good one and the board cannot get stuck.
- Classic: 96 tiles, 12 by 8, with four of most kinds.
- Full set: all 144 tiles of a mahjong set, 16 by 9, flowers and seasons included.
On a phone held upright the board turns on its side, so the tiles stay big enough to tap.
Controls
Tap or click two tiles to match them; tap a picked tile again to put it back. With a keyboard, Tab moves onto the board, the arrow keys move from tile to tile and Enter or Space picks one. H asks for a hint, S shuffles, U takes back your last move and N deals a new board. Big cards makes the tiles larger.
Mahjong Connect or Mahjong Solitaire?
Both are played with mahjong tiles and both ask you to clear the table in pairs. In Mahjong Solitaire the tiles are stacked in layers, and a tile is free when nothing lies on top of it and its left or right side is open. In Mahjong Connect the tiles lie flat in one layer, and any two matching tiles can go, however far apart, as long as the line can reach. If you like one, try the other: the mahjong tiles and their names are the same in both.
